The Agentic Era: Workspace Announcements from Google Next 2026
Google Cloud Next 2026 has officially wrapped, and the message for the future of work is clear: we are moving beyond simple “AI assistance” and entering the Agentic Era.
If you missed the announcements from the show, here’s six of the key Google workspace changes that will be rolling out in the coming weeks, and how you can prepare for this transition.
1. Auto Browse in Chrome: The AI Coworker in Your Browser
Workspace customers can now turn on the auto browse capabilities in Chrome Enterprise. Auto browse is designed to assist with multi-step tasks across both web and your applications, whilst maintaining enterprise grade protections to maintain security.
2. Workspace Skills: Custom Automation for Everyone
Built within the new Workspace Studio, “skills” are reusable AI agents designed to handle specific, routine business processes. For instance, you can develop a skill to automate the review of invoices. By comparing incoming invoices with the most recent ones in your inbox, this skill flags any discrepancies, significantly reducing the laborious effort typically needed to catch billing errors.
3. Sheets Canvas: From Spreadsheets to Mini-Apps
While we’ve had Gemini in Sheets for a while, the new Sheets Canvas takes it a step further. Users can now import live third party data from sheets into apps like Hubspot, Salesforce and Jira directly into a sheet. Whatsmore, Sheets Canvas, allows you to turn that data into heatmaps, dashboards, and kanban boards instantly.
4. Ask Gemini in Chat: Your New Command Centre
Google Chat is being reimagined as your new command centre. You can ask Gemini to find specific files or information scattered across Gmail, Drive, and Calendar without leaving the chat interface. You can also use Gemini to ‘catch you up’ summarising long group threads, and even highlighting sections that need your attention.
5. Branded AI Avatars: Studio Quality at Scale
Tired of expensive and time-consuming video production? Google vids is changing the game. Built with Nano Banana 2, their new branded AI avatars are designed to solve these major hurdles. Including everything from a company logo on a shirt to a fully branded backdrop, avatars will soon be available in 24 languages, with consistent appearance and voice across generations.
6. Governance and Secure Migrations
Google also addressed the two biggest hurdles for enterprise adoption: security and the “pain” of switching. New agent governance controls, such as AI control centre and Workspace studio controls, help you monitor, control, and audit agent access to your data in Workspace. Furthermore, migration is now five times faster with data import, a new cloud service built into the admin console that lets you easily move emails, files, and conversations.
The common thread through all these updates is Workspace Intelligence. Google is building a system that understands the relationships between your files, your people, and your projects. The goal isn’t just to save you 10 minutes on a draft; it’s to provide a digital workforce that handles the heavy lifting of data entry and information retrieval.
